Search the Hong Kong Companies Registry

The primary way to check a company name is through the Companies Registry, which provides an online company name search facility. You can search the proposed English or Chinese company name to identify existing registrations.

When searching, consider:

• Exact matches of the proposed name
• Similar spellings or wording
• Chinese and English versions
• Names that may be considered misleading or undesirable
• Restricted or regulated words that may require approval

A search showing no exact match does not guarantee that the proposed name will be registrable. The Companies Registry can only confirm registrability after processing the incorporation application.

For an Exact Name Search, enter the full proposed name, including spaces, punctuation and ending terms such as ‘Limited’ or ‘有限公司’. Use English or traditional Chinese characters. You can also run a Left Partial Search without ending terms to identify current or former company names that begin with the same characters.

A Hong Kong company may have an English name, a Chinese name, or both. The English name of a limited company must end with ‘Limited’, while a Chinese company name must use traditional Chinese characters. A single company name cannot combine English letters or words with Chinese characters.
